It's not meant to be used outdoor, really. It just replaces your work station, and the entertainment room.
Except it doesn't at all. Even the most excited AVP adopters got tired of using it all the time.

I think it's cool... VR is cool... but people really need to stop with this fantasy that it's going to replace computers and monitors, especially with such a low resolution screen (high for what it is, but low compared to eyeballs) and weight on your face.

Honestly, using it outdoors seems like one of the best feature of AVP, since most XR headsets can't do that or the passthrough is complete garbage.

Can we update the Mac Studio & Mac Pro with M4 first before talking about an M5 already?

Unless they’re skipping the M4 for the high end desktops as well and go straight to M5 next year. Would make more sense anyway. The highest performing machines should get the highest performing chips first, then have the technology trickle down to the rest of the lineup.

They could just be slow playing the glasses so Samsung and google don’t beat them to the punch. I think that’s kind of a no brainer for apple to make glasses that don’t have a lot of onboard processing but a lot of the iPhone sensors and a wireless chip like they have been using in AirPods and screens to overlay information which they have with Vision Pro and the iPhone can handle processing. It’s almost assembling parts they already have and I think they would sell a lot if they came in at like 400.

The killer app for me would be putting on a pair and watching a movie with the AirPods providing sound if they could do this well it would be great for travel. Also it may be good for just using your iPhone in general if they can do the interface well you would be able to have a screen similar to a desktop. Wonder if they could do like a finger ring you can use for control so you can make subtle gestures instead of waving your hands around like a wizard.

I think Double Tap for Apple Watch is a testing ground for AI-assisted neural input. Basically moving your finger so slightly that you’re not really moving it at all.

I just want it for work as my external monitors. It’s just too heavy and the resolution surprisingly needs to be a bit higher still.

The weight of the device is a problem for some and not others. It is clearly a problem for enough people that Apple will have to solve it before they create a device for a mainstream audience. They don’t have to solve that for industrial and developer uses in the short term.

That said, the weight doesn’t bother me. I have found it very useful as a virtual display for my Mac while doing normal development. I’ve used it to play RPGs (EverQuest and Pantheon) on room-size screens. It works fine. I’m not pushing it to its edge with these uses. I would like support for more and/or larger displays. I’m sure that will come in time.

I really don't believe this rumor at all. With all the negative press for AVP after the novelty wore off, I think even less people will buy an updated one than they did the first one.

Apple should go back to doing the 10 years of rumors-only secretive development thing and not release another XR device until it's something the size of an Airpod that you can stick to your temple... just like in their AppleTV+ show Extrapolations. Nobody wants ski goggles and most people don't even want AR sunglasses. All the success in VR is just going to Meta because gaming is the only thing most people actually have any kind of use case for, and Apple can't even acknowledge it. I bet if AVP was pushed as the best gaming VR headset and it had hand controllers, it would be selling a lot better.

here are two bigger changes that are rumored to come to the laptop in a few years from now.

First is an OLED display...

Second is the just-mentioned thinner design.
Apple plans to release an updated Vision Pro headset with its as-yet-unannounced M5 chip in 2025
Damn. Guess I'll skip the M4 MacBook Pro and wait for the thinner M5 OLED version. Only 1 year to go until Oct. 2025 MacBook Pro event

Yeah I keep thinking they're gonna do this... but they clearly are committed to releasing things backwards forever. We're going to be deciding between cutting edge Mac Minis and 2-year-outdated Mac Studios for the rest of our lives.

My experience is the opposite. My use has gone from excited experimentation for a couple of hours a day when I first got it to, within a month, only occasional use. Then, as I became more accustomed to its strengths, my use started to increase. Skip forward to the last couple of months and I use it several hours a day, every day. Using it as display for my Mac while using Xcode is a major use case for me. So… YMMV.

Will the M5 feature 2nm architecture?
It's possible. Taiwan Semi is (so far) on schedule to enter volume production next year for 2nm chips

TSMC 2nm (N2) technology development is on track and made good progress. N2 technology features the company’s first generation of nanosheet transistor technology with full-node strides in performance and power consumption. Volume production is expected in 2025.

and Apple is usually first in line for those new chips.

dang it I'm going to finish off paying my M2 AVP and the M5 is going to come out right after.
Don't repeat the mistake and get the M5 version used instead. 50% off with free accessories and Apple care just a few months in.

If you don’t need the speed of the M4 and can wait, then why wouldn’t you wait?

The FOMO is strong in this one.

To reduce the price, offload the computing to an external device like an iPhone or Mac (like all others do, btw). This reduces the AVP to a much lighter monitor with sensors. So you don’t have to include the computing power of a MBP. Additionally, lifetime of such a device would improve.
Remove the outward facing display with the spooky eyes and there you go - this would be a good update.

The current Vision Pro has a confusing vision and is too heavy.

A continuation of the Pro model at top prices would allow Apple to market it like the Mac Pro and sell it directly to industry.

A cheaper USB-C peripheral device would allow them to upsell it to ecosystem fans and use that version for their entertainment vision.

Dropping the front display, replacing the visor with plastic, distributing smaller batteries around the headset and offloading the processing to an iDevice or Mac would allow for a lot less weight and cost.

What Apple should also do is build the tech into a lenticular Studio Display. This would only need to be $2000 as it would offload processing to the Mac yet would allow for 3D visuals and manipulation on a standard screen. They could also build a lenticular iPad.
yes - I feel weight is the biggest Problem with regards to productive use

It just seems like battery life would be atrocious if powered by an iPhone

That’s fine with me. By time the cheaper version is released beyond 2027, the App Store apps and VisionOS will be much better.

2025 - 3.0
2026 - 4.0
2027 - 5.0
2028 - 6.0

Can’t wait for all those extra goodies by then.

Love when folks say, "what apple should do" - like they know better than a trillion dollar company.

I really hope they do not continue this pattern. It would be yet again a sign from Apple that they do not care about the professional users who spend the most on these machines.

Surprised they’re only ‘considering’ the connected glasses. Most would likely agree that when you have a computer as powerful as an iPhone, it makes sense to offload processing to it.
They can guarantee a level of performance with built in soc. They can't do that with an iPhone, even if they require x model, because who knows what else the user is doing with their phone. Also, you still need a battery

going to be insane if this does release next year and remain close or less than the current $3500 starting price as now that production material to product the v1 VP has been established, reusing any process to reduce cost and come in at a lower base is something to hope for🤞🤞🤞🤞
