Apple is likely to introduce a new iPad mini with an OLED display as soon as 2026, market research firm Omdia claims.

According to Omdia's latest long-term OLED display adoption forecast, the iPad mini will get the technology in 2026 or 2027, followed by the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air in 2027-2028. These devices will apparently use single-stack 60Hz OLED panels.

As for Macs, Omdia believes Apple will apply 120Hz OLED two-stack panels to the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models as early as 2026, followed by 13.8-inch and 15.5-inch MacBook Air models with 120Hz single-stack panels in 2028. Two-stack panels have two emission layers, which doubles brightness and quadruples display lifespan.

Meanwhile, Omdia predicts that Apple will launch an 18.8-inch foldable device with a 120Hz single-stack panel in 2028 or later.

Commenting on the forecast, shared on X (Twitter) by leaker @Jukanlosreve, oft-accurate Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) CEO Ross Young suggested that his own predictions largely align with Omdia's predictions, barring subtle differences, such as his firm expectation that the OLED MacBook Air will use an oxide backplane and not LPTO.

OLED panels can individually control each pixel, resulting in more precise color reproduction and deeper blacks compared to other common display technologies. They also provide superior contrast, faster response times, better viewing angles, and greater design flexibility. All of Apple's flagship iPhones use OLED panels, and in May the company brought the display technology to the iPad Pro for the first time.

Interesting, how they would deal with displays burn-in on laptops.
Current OLED monitors starts to retain parts of image on the screen after of couple months of active use for work.

Bring on Mini 8 in 2026, then 9 in about 2028-9 and I replace my 6 with that 9… or maybe 10. My Mini 2 was replaced with the 6. These things have long use life legs. 9 or 10 should seem relatively amazing. Good to see rumors that imply Apple evolution is about right on schedule.

I can’t help but chuckle each time I read "as early as" followed by a date still far away even though many other devices have been using the technology for several years already.

I just bought the ipad mini 7. Love this thing. An Oled screen would be even better! Hopefully with slimmer bezels, face ID, 120hz display & 1,000 nits of brightness. Heh heh heh 😈 If you go by Apples usual ipad mini update cycle, the mini 8 will be released in Fall of 2027. But who knows, maybe Fall of 2026? 🤷‍♂️ In the meantime, I’m gonna be very productive on my ipad mini 7. 👍🏼

Can you please state which devices have been using double stacked 120hz OLED panels for several years?

OK, even though I feel some trolling there, ignoring the main point of my comment, I’ll take the bait: in September 2026, the iPad Pro will have been using this kind of panel for two and a half years already. :p
As for the MacBook Air adopting single OLED in 2028… well, I will not spend time researching when the first laptop using an OLED display was released, but it was sure several years ago already… :)

gah, soon OLED only - will it be the next "butterfly-keyboard"- winter to skip buying anything with it...? (not interested in shortlived OLED-screens, my LCD-screens works just fine and a long time too!)

Although it’s quite disingenuous to say that.
For example, the iPad Pro only got OLED this year, yet Samsung has had them on their tablets for over a decade.
But Apple’s OLED is a significantly better than those android tablets from 10 years ago, and even better than the OLED displays on the latest of Galaxy tablets.
Likewise, yes, there are plenty of windows OLED laptops.
But none are even going to come close to the standard that Apple requires.
Apple just also requires a lot more of them in a very short time.

What about that mini's 2:3 aspect ratio? or that 10:7 11' pro aspect ratio?
The iPad is not a media consumption device only... the mini is the horrible of them all BTW.

apple need to bring back the 3:4 aspect ratio on all models and slim the lineup as well.

Agree totally
Lack of meaningful screen technology upgrades and aspect ratio changes are the two reasons I just received and am using a BNIB Mini 5

Why does it take Apple so long to implement something?
they want to be able to charge a lot for a premium product (and they usually wants lots of the components too) then someone else needs to work out all the bugs and quirks with sub-par components not worthy for an apple product.... (wish this was always true though, my jellyscrolling iPad mini 6 isn't up to the standard IMHO)

Honestly, over a year to get a 60Hz OLED for what should have happened a year ago, albeit 120Hz.

Apple have got to stop this nonsense of being so far behind the market. iPad Mini is a premium tablet, not a budget tablet!!

Not trolling but stating that what you are saying is factually incorrect. The iPad Pro M4 with OLED (double stacking) was released in May 15, 2024. The previous iPad pros used mini-led which you might be confusing.
