Google Maps has featured detailed cycling directions for almost a decade now, and with the arrival of iOS 14, Apple Maps is finally introducing its own.

The steps below show you how to make use of the new cycling directions in Apple's Maps app. If you have an Apple Watch running watchOS 7 or later, you can receive the directions you select right on your wrist, for easy at-a-glance navigation.

Note that at the time of writing, cycling directions in Apple Maps are limited to New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Beijing.
  1. Launch the Maps app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap the search field and type a place or address you want to go.
  3. Tap Directions.

Tap the bicycle icon, second to right in the row of transport options.
  4. You can use the toggles below the suggested directions to avoid hills and/or busy roads.
Tap Go to start the turn-based directions.

Before you tap Go, Maps charts any elevation changes along the suggested cycling route and gives the total climb, distance, and the approximate time it takes. Apple Maps may even suggest if you should take a flight of stairs to save time.

It's going to have to be pretty feature rich to get me to stop using Komoot but I'm hopeful and excited for this.

Portland, OR should have definitely been one of the first cities with these directions. Come on Tim!!!

I use this all the time if I need something in the moment when cycling.

But i usually build my own routes off Strava with the heatmaps which turns out great results.

Not helpful regardless. I don't understand why g maps or Apple Maps can not actually find good safe bicycle routes. Good maps will just send you on a route that is OK for bikes but maybe dangerous. The Maps should be able to tell which routes are "preferred" by actual bicyclists rather than those for which bicycles are able to drive

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing. Google Maps claims to have bike routes but happily directs me to ride on a 4-lane divided highway as soon as I get a block away from my house.

I'm in NYC but I get "Cycling Directions Not Available. Cycling directions are not currently available in this area."

Does anyone have any idea why?

I live in Los Angeles and bike directions do not work for me yet.

I’ve been using biking directions on Google maps for years now, never needed a tutorial. So much for Apple’s “just works.”

Also: it’s not out of left field to expect a beta 3 today, is it?

Seriously? This is just an article to fill space and remind people of a recently added feature.

And for others above, like any other route in Maps, you will be able to submit feedback on why another route or road is preferred/better for cycling so they can incorporate that feedback into the app ("suggest a better route").

About time... Komoot, googlemaps...
Hope Apple Maps measures up and comes with maybe even better usability and alternative suggestions. Maybe work in user trends somehow?
